Ia mulai membuat dan menjual rokok kretek linting tangan di rumahnya di Surabaya, Indonesia. Perusahaan kecilnya tersebut merupakan salah satu perusahaan pertama yang memproduksi dan memasarkan rokok kretek dan rokok putih secara komersial Rokok kretek tumbuh populer dengan pesat.
